William R. Freeman, M.D.
Dr. Freeman is an internationally acclaimed scientific researcher and Director of the Jacobs Retina Research Center, adjoining the UCSD Shiley Eye Center. Dr. Freeman, a retina surgeon, has published over 350 scientific papers, over 240 scientific abstracts, the highly regarded book Practical Atlas of Retinal Disease and Therapy, as well as numerous important medical chapters in the field of retina disease. He is also Director of Ophthalmology and the Vitreoretinal Training Program at UCSD and past President of the San Diego Eye Society. Along with his inclusion again in the most recent The Best Doctors in America, Dr. Freeman serves on the editorial boards of two prestigious journals: Retina and Ophthalmology, the vision journal with the largest readership in the world. He is also on the Board of two additional journals: The Journal of Ocular Immunology and Ocular Infection.
He is a member of numerous academic societies including the Academy of Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, American Uveitis Society, Aspen Retinal Detachment Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Association of Proctor Fellows, the Retina and Macula Societies. Dr. Freeman was selected as the permanent President of the International Society of Ocular Infections.
Dr. Freeman graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, New York. He then went on to hold a one year fellowship from the Proctor Foundation, UCSF, San Francisco, California, in Uveitis/Immunology and a two year fellowship at the University of Southern California, Doheny Eye Foundation, Los Angeles, California in Vitreo-retinal Surgery.
